Yes! Sign up, load funds (credit, debit or gift card) and pay with our fast, secure app and automatically earn your first free regular, classic milkshake ($2.99 value) and then earn $5 in food for every $50 spent with the app!

Q. How can I fund my app for fast, secure, automated rewards?

We provide four ways for you to fund your account:

      1) register a debit or credit card,
      2) migrate/load a gift card purchased in-store or on-line (http://www.steaknshake.com/gift-card),
      3) load funds one time or by auto-reload, or
      4) coming soon – load funds at the in-store POS/cashier with cash or a debit/credit card.
Q. Do I have to provide a debit or credit card for payment?

Actually, you don’t have to! More on that in a bit (or see the prior question)… We ask for (and dutifully protect) your payment information so we can offer you a fast, secure way to pay and earn rewards with every purchase (versus remembering receipts, an e-mail address or registered phone #, etc.). This also enables us to offer you more streamlined, future capabilities, such as mobile ordering, pay-at-the-table, and unique/personalized promotions and services. If you do not wish to provide a debit or credit card, you can fund your account by migrating a gift card (purchased on-line or at the store). To migrate a gift card go to Settings > Add a Gift Card. We are also currently deploying the ability for you to load funds at the in-store POS/cashier with cash or a debit/credit card.

Q. $5 credit for setting up Auto-Reload? How do “Auto-Reload” and “Load Funds” work?

We are currently running a promotion to credit a Rewards member $5 if they set-up and use the auto-reload feature with $50 or more. This enables us to more quickly settle transactions. You can access the Manage Funds screen from either the Pay screen, the Rewards screen or from the Settings screen (Manage Preferences/Load Funds). The Load Funds feature enables you to load funds at any time. Once these funds have been used we will charge the card on file for the remaining balance of your meal. The auto-reload feature automatically funds your account if your balance falls below $10. These features will also enable us to offer you more services in the near future.

Q. How do you use my personal information?

Steak ‘n Shake is extremely cautious with your personal information. Our privacy policy can be found here: http://www.steaknshake.com/privacy. In addition, we guard your data with industry leading practices, such as ensuring your payment credentials (such as a credit card number) are NEVER stored on the phone, but rather secured at a 3rd party payment processor. Our Rewards application partner, LevelUp, was chosen for their expertise in not only mobile apps and loyalty programs, but also information security. Q. Can I track my Rewards progress in the app?

Yes! Open the app and hit the ‘Rewards’ icon at the bottom of the screen. The middle of this screen highlights the Steak ‘n Shake logo to illustrate your progress. Also, a statement near the bottom of the screen states how much spend is require to unlock your next $5 in rewards. The top of the Rewards screen shows your total credit from current promotions, your current loyalty reward (the $5 earned) and funds you loaded into your account from a debit, credit or gift card. Each purchase made with the app shows in the Settings > Transaction History log. Finally, if you enabled push notifications, you’ll also get a notification right to your screen after each purchase summarizing your purchase and Rewards progress. Go to your phone’s system settings menu to enable notifications.

Q. How do I tip my server?

We hope every guest’s experience in our stores is outstanding. You can set a tip before every transaction using an input at the bottom of the Pay screen (below the QR code). Only enter the tip amount (not the meal cost) in this field.

Q. Can I see/track my purchase history?

Yes. To view your transactions on the app, open the Settings > Transaction History. The settings button looks like a gear in the upper right hand corner of the home screen. A digital receipt of each order is provided. Each receipt is also e-mailed to you with more details associated with each transaction (e.g., food items purchased, if a gift card was used) and a summary of your progress to earning more rewards!

Q. Can I get an e-mail receipt as well?

When you pay with the Steak ‘n Shake Rewards app you immediately receive an emailed receipt, even if you opted out of push-notifications. The receipt details your order total and any credit applied to the purchase. It also displays a status bar showing your progress towards your next loyalty reward (handy for expense reports and payment card statement review).

Q. Which mobile phone operating systems are supported and why?

We currently support Apple iPhone and Android phones. We were disappointed not to be able to release a Windows version. We reviewed the % of Android, Apple and Windows phones out there and found that the very low percentage of Windows phones did not justify the expense.

Q. Do I have to have a “smart phone”?

Yes, a “smart phone” (e.g., Android, iPhone) is required for our Rewards app as it was the only way we could offer a secure, fast way for guests to pay, automatically earn and redeem credit and track all of their transactions with one device/app. We have demand for more features that can only be delivered through a smart phone (e.g., online ordering, more gift card functions, and richer details of account status). We are demanding when it comes to protecting our guests from fraud and identity issues while providing a rich set of capabilities.

Q. Are you supporting Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay?

We currently support Apple Pay to easily set-up and load funds into your account using the debit/credit card you have linked to your Apple Pay account. We are currently deploying new secure payment terminals to all stores so as to allow guest to pay with NFC-enabled phones. We are also working on integrating Apple Pay and Android Pay to streamline payments and ensure you receive your rewards. We plan to complete this integration later this year.

Q. How do I add or change a debit or credit card?

We provide two methods to add a card, both of which can be reached from the Pay and Rewards screens: tap “Manage Funds.” This screen can also be reached from the Settings menu: Settings > Payment Preferences / Load Funds. Tap Add New Card and you'll be asked to add your card in 1 of 2 ways (see below). To remove an existing card, swipe left on the card and tap Delete (iPhone) or tap and hold down on the card and tap OK to delete the card (Android). Cards can be entered two ways:

Scan-your card feature:

  • Find good lighting
  • Align the card so the green box outlines the card completely. If a side of the card isn’t outlined in green, it’s too far from the edge of the border box.
  • After the card scans, double-check that the numbers are correct
  • Add your CVV number and expiration date before submitting
  • PayPal provides this scanning technology, but are not in any way related to your card’s data.

Type in a card:

  • We accept debit and credit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover
  • Make sure you have connectivity to Wi-Fi or cellular service
  • Enter your full card number, without spaces
  • Enter the CVV
  • Enter an expiration date
  • Click the LINK CARD button
Q. How do gift cards work? Can I transfer my plastic gift card into my Rewards account? Can I send eGift cards?

Yes and yes! We offer a convenient way to migrate existing plastic gift cards into your Rewards account. Once added to your account you no longer need to remember the gift card and we don’t charge fees for those funds (as some merchants do) if they are not used for an extended period. We apply these funds to your next purchases automatically. Note that once you migrate a card, the card is void and should be discarded. For example, don’t try to reload that card and migrate the funds to your account. To migrate an existing plastic card’s funds into your Rewards account go to Settings > Migrate Gift Card and follow the instructions. Again, please dispose of the migrated card and note that once migrated, this cannot be reversed.

Sending digital gift cards is easy and fast! Tap the “Gift” button on the bottom of the home screen and follow the instructions. If the recipient is already a Rewards member, these funds are automatically placed into their Rewards account along with the thoughtful note you entered. If they are not a Rewards member, they can either easily become one or they can print the digital card e-mail and use the provided QR code to pay for their meals.

Q. Can I capture my Rewards if I forgot or lost my phone or for some other reason can't access the app?

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer Rewards credit unless the store’s systems are not operating. If this is the case, please contact our support desk at Steaknshake@thelevelup.com and they can issue you credit. You will need to prove the purchase with a receipt image and provide an explanation so that we can track down the root cause and improve the experience wherever possible.

Please note that at this time the app may only be used to pay for purchases at checkout in-store. You may not use the app to pay for orders submitted online.

Q. How do I reset my password?

Tap the "Forgot your password?" link on the log-in page, where you'll be prompted to put in your email (the one used to register for the program). Follow the steps sent to your email to reset your password. If you happen to have multiple apps powered by LevelUp, it’s the same password for all apps.

Q. Can I scan coupons/barcodes/QR code?

We are not using this capability at this time, but in the future we plan to offer you a “digital coupon wallet” so you can easily capture coupons in your app and have automatically applied to your next check! Additionally you will not need to scan your receipts in any way.

Q. How do I manage my profile?

Go to the settings screen (the button that looks like a gear in the upper right hand corner of the home screen) and select “Profile”. From here you can edit your profile, which takes effect immediately.

Q. Is the Steak ‘n Shake App secure?

We take security of your personal information very seriously. Your credit card information is transmitted by SSL directly to a secure electronic vault. At no time is your credit card information stored on our servers or on your phone. Additionally, we never share your personal information with third parties, including businesses that work with LevelUp as a way to pay. Q. Can I reset my QR code?

Yes! Resetting your QR Code is simple! You can call LevelUp Support at 855-538-3542, or type in a request from the app. If you want to do it yourself, you can:

  • Log in to your account at TheLevelUp.com
  • Use your Steak ‘n Shake App email/password to log in
  • Click the 'Deactivate' tab on the left side of your Control Panel, and again next to the unique QR Code you need to deactivate
  • Clicking Deactivate will generate a new QR Code for you to pay with and ensure that your old QR Code will no longer work. It will also log you out of your account on all devices where you’re logged in. You’ll get a new QR Code simply by logging back in.
Q. What do I do if my phone is lost or stolen?

Our Rewards system with LevelUp is an incredibly secure payment system and stopping activity on your account is simple. All you need to do is deactivate your LevelUp QR code (explained above), which logs your account out on all devices. You can also contact our customer support and we can pause your Rewards account immediately.
